The 2017 Buckeye District Baden Powell Turtle Camporee – also know as the “Turtle Hike” is coming up at the end of April This is a Backpacking trip in the Buckeye District that happens only once in four years. All participants who complete the trip and conservation project will receive a neckerchief and Turtle Medal.
We will assemble at the church Saturday morning at 7am April 29th and travel to the trailhead east of Mt. Vernon. Once we have checked in, we will hike 8 miles along dirt roads and cross country to the camporee site. During the trip we will perform a conservation project along the river. At the camporee we will eat as a unit, enjoy a scout campfire program, witness an OA Callout, and enjoy a late cracker barrel before lights out. Sunday morning we will hike 9 miles back out to the trail head. We will then head back to the trail for scout pickup.
Since this is a backpacking trip, you will special equipment and there will NOT be a trailer joining us. You should plan on carrying everything you need – tent, change of clothes, at least 2 liters of water, snacks, 10 essentials, etc – on your back. There will be water and latrine at the camporee site.
For food, we will need to see how many participants we have before making plans, but in the past we’ve eaten as just one large group. HOWEVER, you will need to pack your own trail lunch for Saturday. Our meals for now will be something like this:
Saturday Breakfast – eat before you arrive
Saturday Lunch – Bring trail lunch
Saturday Dinner – to be determined
Sunday Breakfast – to be determined
Sunday Lunch – to be determined
The outing permission form, an information sheet, and a suggested equipment guide are available in our Troop Downloads area.
